Black Friday 2026

Buying a
renewed iPhone?

A renewed iPhone can be the best Black Friday buy of all: most of a new phone's ability, for less money, and no new phone made. It can also be a battery that's already tired or a phone that's nearly out of updates. Here's how to tell the difference.

Which renewed iPhone is the smart buy?

The price on the listing is only half the cost. What matters is how many years the phone will keep getting iOS updates, and what Apple charges if something breaks later.

Updates left is our estimate from Apple's past pattern of about seven years, not an Apple promise. Repair prices are Apple's US out-of-warranty estimates.

Our take: an iPhone 15 or newer gets you USB-C and more years of updates; a 15 Pro or any 16 adds Apple Intelligence. A renewed iPhone 13 or 14 is fine if the price reflects its shorter remaining support.

The checklist before you buy

  1. Unlocked, or locked to your carrier? An unlocked phone works on any carrier. A locked one may not work on yours.
  2. Battery health. Look for the battery condition the seller promises on the listing. Below 80% means a battery replacement soon, which you can price in from the table above.
  3. Return window and warranty. Check how long you have to return it and what the seller covers. Test everything in that window.
  4. The seller. Read recent reviews for the seller, not just the product.
  5. Cosmetic grade. Grades like “Excellent” or “Good” describe scratches, not how well the phone works.
  6. Storage. 128 GB fills up fast with photos. Check whether iCloud+ or a bigger model is cheaper over the years you'll keep it.
  7. On arrival: check Settings → General → About for the model, Settings → Battery → Battery Health, and that Find My was turned off by the previous owner.

Or keep the one you have

If your current iPhone still gets updates, a new battery from Apple ($89 to $129) may give you most of what a renewed phone would, for less.

See whether fixing your own iPhone beats buying another one.
